Artist Statement
Painting with hot, liquid wax is an ancient technique being explored in new ways today. The
combination of the 2000 year old medium (encaustic wax) on the modern
surface of plexiglas or mylar, for instance, creates a fresh visual experience. The
light coming through the back of the plexiglas picks up the colored
pigments in the wax and shows them to the viewer in a way that lacks the
heaviness of traditional materials. Wax on plexiglas looks like color floating
in space.
The encaustic painting process applied to wood includes building up layers of wax by
brushing on a layer of liquid wax then heating it with a torch to join the
top layer to the layers below. The tranluscency of wax creates a depth
unique to this medium. The light sinks into the crevasses in the dark areas
and bounces back from lower wax layers in the lighter parts of the painting. The apparent
depth and texture is augmented by the actual build up of the wax layers.
In the pigmented ink paintings, each mark is made on the computer. Sometimes a photograph is used to initiate the image but usually the process begins with no aids and a blank computer screen. The images are printed with Ultrachrome Ink on 100% rag paper. The original, archival images are usually printed in editions of 25, usually sized 23"x23".
